In a parking lot. I pulled in to check a text message, and then had to really give it the beans to get moving again, even with AWD.
Summer tires are a bitch.

"Summer tires are a bitch."
I came in here to ask about your tire situation. Glad that you've identified the issue. Please make it better, for the children, and only after that be on your way.
Thank you.
Oh, and, summer tires are awesome. In summer.

Agreed. I decided I could get by with not changing to snow tires over thanksgiving break, since it usually doesn't snow much here.
That was not the case this year, however, and now I'm 200 miles from decent winter tires.

Summer tires lose their advantage around 50° since they become to stiff to flex and grip the road effectively

My Civic got stuck in a little downhill grass last night... really sucked.. had to floor it in reverse to get out

Not to mention the harder rubber is just less tacky, and the lack of proper siping for the meltwater to be drawn away.

Here in Michigan we've been hit pretty hard with snow on the westside of the state, I'm running my all-seasons on an AWD car, I've come nowhere near close to be stuck. It's my first real winter with my AWD car and I'm loving it. I bet it'd be real impressive with winter tires.

I did the exact same thing this year. Figured we never get much snow in December and I could wait. Wound up putting my snows on in a hurry while the first flakes of an 8" storm were falling last weekend.
I pretty much have a Masters degree in procrastination.

I've got an STI that I run winters on. AWD on winter tires is impressive. That car is a better winter vehicle than a full size 4x4 truck. Until it starts plowing too much snow to keep momentum which I came close to only once. Went in to a hockey game with no fresh snow. Came out and there were knee deep drifts in the parking lot. On the way home the bumper was catching lots of snow and there were times I couldn't see because so much snow was coming vertically over the hood and clearing the car. It was a good thing there wasn't any traffic, because backing off the gas would have meant being stuck in the middle of the lane.
When I got home late that night it took me a couple hours to dig enough of a path to get my truck out of the driveway and up to its winter parking spot. And even then it took me a few runs to get the truck up the short, very steep and very drifted over driveway.

Wow. Such Snow. Much Drift.
I couldn't resist. Anyways, I feel my car is better than a truck too. Mostly because it isn't so damn large and heavy. And a Taurus is no small car, lol.

Yes, much drift is had in the winter. Standard procedure is to pull into the parking lot at work sideways.
There is something to be said for keeping the COG as low as possible. But there are also times that more weight is better too, like when the snow is slushy and wet.

Yeah my 5000+ pound SHO does the weight thing well enough.
Low COG makes me more comfortable in the snow for sure, haha.
I am sideways whenever possible, this is my first real winter with AWD and I am amazed how controllable a drift is, haha.

I've literally been unable to leave my apartment for a week now. I only briefly ventured outside to meet a friend for a movie, and even on mostly clear roads, it was sketchy as hell.

Heh. I once earned the ire of a restaraunt manager when I pulled a 180 handbrake turn to enter the parking lot tail-first.

I've done one winter on Michelin Pilot AS+ tires, and two now on X-ice Xi2's.
Honestly, I can't tell a real difference. If anything, the AS tires were /better/. That's why I'm skipping the half ass treatment and just getting Hakkas.
My mom replaced the Pirellis on her S6 with the Pilot AS3's, and they're marvelous for an all season.

I can get away with that kind of stuff at my place of employment. We've got our own lot and I'm the one who has to deal with it.

I've always had good luck with all-seasons. I'd really only get winter-tires if I were doing winter races or had a RWD car I want to run through the winter.

Every time an AWD sport sedan plows past a stuck bro truck, God spares a kitten.
I'm just thinking of the kittens.
